"The Dirt on Convential Disposables

  • 60% of babies in the U.S. under twelve months get diaper rash
  • the rate of diaper rash increased from 7.1% of babies to 61% with the increased use of convential disposable diapers
  • Sodium Polyacrylate is the chemical that makes disposables superabsorbent - it can absorb up to 100x its weight in water.  It can stick to baby's private, and cause allergic reactions.  In the U.S., this chemical was removed from tampons in 1985 when it was linked to toxic shock syndrome.
  • Some studies show there is a rise in urinary-tract infections in babies as caregivers often change concentional gel-filled disposables less frequently than either cloth diapers or gel-free disposables, due to their superabsorbency.
  • Superabsorbents also heat up when wet - a potential concern for boys' developing testes.
  • Dioxin is a by-product of the paper-bleaching process used in manufacturing disposable diapers and is a carinogen."

The author goes on to say that she could not find a green or toxin-free diaper service and then suggests you wash your own diapers at home... well the great news is HAPPY NAPPY is the environmental option!

E-Coli Infections with disposables

Thank goodness for Happy Nappy Diaper service! This time I am staying on the service- it's much easier, last time I chose to start washing my own diapers at home after being on Happy Nappy's service for 9 months I briefly had to switch to disposables due to emergency in our family and within weeks my daughter developed an E-COLI infection in her bladder. The doctors say it is common with children using disposable diapers so common that they have a treatment protocol for E-coli infections. That means they see so many there is now a standard way to treat it!! The experience was horrible. My daughter was so sick she was in the Stollery Childrens Hospital for days and had to have many tests for months on end some were traumatic to watch- and I am not a sesitive person. She was on antibiotics for over a year. The doctors say she will always be more susceptible to bladder and urinary tract infections and has a small amount of scar tissue on her kidneys- all because of disposable diapers Cloth diapers are the way to go. This time I am staying on the service until potty training time.
