I am just a little concerned with what I was reading, so I thought I would share it with you and get your feedback.
An ad caught my eye and it read "NOW available in Size 6!" It went on to say that it was great news for moms and described how absorbant they were. The ad was very proud of the fact that they have changed the packaging to make it easier for "moms" to identify the size of diapers they need to purchase. I compared this to the old packageing and guess what? Yep, there are less diapers per box now. Same great price though.. What I am more concerned about is the type of education that this ad is trying to instill in our way of thinking. Have you ever asked yourself why a mom needs a size 6 diaper. If you read P&G research, they say a baby only needs daipers till age 2 1/2. Last time I checked, a size 5 was big enought for a 3 year old plus. Are they trying to tell us that it is ok that your 4 year old is still in diapers but wait...the new size 6 diaper makes it all better. The worry is that few seasoned moms read this ad. The ad is for new moms. Moms that have never used the old cloth diapers. Moms that don't realize that it is not normal for a toddler after 3 years to still be in diapers. It's not normal that a toddler has to look at the diaper to see what colour it is to know if they have had an "accident." If the child is old enough to reason that if The Cookie Monster is blue I must have gone poo, they are certainly old enough to be potty trained. Moms are potting training their children before the first year. Now there is a great idea.. Why doesn't P&G just offer 3 sizes. Because after that you really don't need diapers any more. I would like to think that it would solve their packaging dilemma at the same time.
As a mom of 5 I know that potty training is at best a challenge! It does take consistency and alot of work and I can see how some parents might choose the larger size diaper choosing to put the 'training' on hold. Barring any medical reasons that a child is still in diapers past the 2.5 year mark I think it comes right down to what's convenient and not what's best for your child. According to today's advertisements the message is clear, it's okay to have your child in diapers until they go to school. WOW! What do you think?? Anita J
